MISSION STATEMENT

   The Cyrus Eaton Foundation is committed to providing financial support to qualifying non-profit organizations, primarily in Cleveland and northeast Ohio, whose programs enhance the quality of life in this area, and whose aims are in accord with those of our founder, the late Cyrus Eaton.

The Foundation provides funding
in these priority areas:

  • Arts
  • Conservation
  • Education
  • Health and Social Welfare
  • Public Affairs
  • Science

PRIORITIES

The Arts

The performing and visual arts open our hearts and minds to the artistic imagination of others and our eyes to the undreamt possibilities within us.

The Foundation supports not only well-known regional art institutions but also up-and-coming organizations, which broaden the audience for the arts.

Conservation

Conservation not only preserves our architectural and environmental history, but it also works toward ensuring a healthy environment.

The Foundation considers programs that educate people about the past and the future development of our region. In addition, we support programs whose aim is to control urban sprawl, preserve historical landmarks, and protect our natural habitats.

Education

Quality education engages our imagination, energizes our quest for knowledge, eliminates misperceptions and encourages life-long learning. John Dewey, the renowned educational philosopher and neighbor-friend of Cyrus Eaton, advocated learning by doing and encouraged independent thinking.

The Foundation supports organizations that utilize hands-on learning, that foster academic skills, and that design programs which stimulate the learner’s understanding of diversity, invention, and risk-taking. We encourage programs that nourish creativity and enhance artistic skills.

Health and Social Welfare

The health and social welfare of our community require commitment to the care of the mental, physical and social well being of the diverse populations of our community. Shelter, medical treatment, counseling, and one-on-one attention are only a few of the ingredients that help people live a healthier life and become more self-reliant.

The Foundation supports institutions that provide free medical and social services to our citizens without discrimination. We encourage innovative and caring solutions to community problems.

Public Affairs

Public Affairs involve the civic-mindedness of citizens as they work together to solve social, political and economic issues. Free speech is essential to the exchange of diverse ideas.

The Foundation promotes the distribution of information to help citizens make informed decisions. We also encourage community responsibility and debate of ideas.

Science

Science requires that its students hypothesize, test theories, seek multiple ways to solve problems, and design inventions. In addition, scientists must explore the ethical dilemmas that scientific progress faces.

The Foundation supports programs that cultivate curiosity, encourage scientific inquiry, and exhibit scientific discoveries. We also encourage hands-on experimentation and the development of quality resources.

Cyrus Stephen Eaton
Biography

1883-1979

Cyrus Eaton, born in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, came to Cleveland in 1906. While still a college student of theology at McMasters University, he was invited to Cleveland by his uncle, pastor of John D. Rockefeller's church. Rockefeller hired Eaton and inspired him to be an industrialist who rejoiced in hard work and strenuous play.

An innovative businessman,

Eaton built enterprises in steel, coal, iron ore, railroads, lake shipping, rubber, paint, utilities, and finance;

A statesman,

Eaton was dedicated to the quest for international friendship, disarmament, and peace. In 1994, the Pugwash Conferences, which Eaton helped found, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

A philosopher,

Eaton brought together scholars and scientists of many countries to share ideas and explore ways to co-exist peacefully;

A farmer,
Eaton bred Shorthorn beef cattle and raised water fowl to be released into the wilderness;

An avid reader,
Eaton embraced philosophy, literature, history, and science;

An outdoorsman and athlete,
Eaton believed everyone should have access to trails, woodlands, and picnic places;

A Clevelander,
Eaton cared about its schools, industry, culture, and growth.
