Success Stories

Here's the start of "success stories"- organizations from each of our several categories to whom we have made all the difference. Here is a partial list:

THE ARTS: Cleveland Opera: founded in 1977, the company rose to national prominence under the leadership of David and Carola Bamberger, despite the fact that it was not the brainchild Cleveland's musical establishment. The Foundation helped launch the company, providing a major part of its inaugural season funding, and sizeable grants annually until the change in its leadership after the Bambergers' retirement.

SCIENCE: The Foundation is very proud of its sustained support of the International Pugwash Conferences of Scientists. We helped fund the first-ever endowment of the International Pugwash, and we have considered it of paramount importance to help U.S. Pugwash with a sizeable annual gift which helps American scientists attend these vital conferences around the world.

EDUCATION: The Foundation has proudly supported Facing History and Ourselves, an important educational initiative whose Cleveland chapter has grown by leaps and bounds.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS: The City Club of Cleveland, a bastion of free speech, received a major Foundation grant to endow a chair in memory of Cyrus Eaton, who remained grateful all his life that the City Club was willing to give him the opportunity to voice his controversial views.

CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION: Our funding of EcoCity Cleveland enabled this landmark agency to raise area consciousness - and consensus - on the importance of mindful urban development and redevelopment with a view to respecting the ecological health of this area.

HEALTH & SOCIAL WELFARE: Greater Cleveland Community Shares: Greater Cleveland Community Shares: our funding helped to launch, sustain, and grow this workplace giving federation, founded in 1985 as an alternative to United Way for those who wished to contribute to less-mainstream endeavors. “Shares” continues to be Cleveland's only workplace giving federation with a focus on social justice. It is now the second largest such fund in the country, with 36 member organizations.
